yogurt parfait and granola

I'm back in town and doing some catching up. Fortunately, my sister-in-law, Catherine, put together a post and recipe for me so I can get through my mile long to do list before I get back to this here blog. Thanks Catherine!

I'm a frozen yogurt nut. Actually, the vast majority of my extended family is, too. With the dawn of Pinkberry and Red Mango has exploded a veritable cultured cornucopia of delicious eating. I think the best part of this particular dessert is the toppings. Toppings are easy enough to emulate, but the soft-serve frozen goodness part isn't as easy to procure for home consumption. So the next best thing is fresh yogurt with toppings!

I can't say that I came up with this idea on my own. Casey and I share a mother in law, Sandi. She is a nutrition teacher, and she is always coming up with easy and fun cooking ideas to help promote better eating habits in school aged children. She made yogurt parfaits with her students, and it sounded so good I decided to do a grownup version for the kid in all of us.

Yogurt Parfaits

Plain and/or Vanilla Low or Non-fat yogurt (you can squeeze a little
lemon juice and some agave syrup in to make it really zingy)
Granola (see recipe below)

Other toppings could include strawberries, mangos, raspberries, blueberry compote, chocolate shavings, etc. Or if you want to be really decadent you could put a few brandied cherries on top!

The cool thing about making your own granola is you can put whatever you want in it! I personally hate slivered almonds (hey, we all have something) so for the nuts I used macadamias. You can add fiber filler like wheat germ or you can experiment with different types of grains, seeds, and dried fruit, too.

Homemade Granola

1 lb old-fashioned rolled oats
1/2 macadamia nuts (chopped)
1/2 C un-sweetened coconut (shredded)
1/3 C canola oil
1/3 C honey
1/4 C light brown sugar
dash cinnamon
1/8 tsp vanilla extract
pinch of salt

Preparation
Pre-heat oven to 325F

In large bowl combine oats, nuts, and coconut.
In a small saucepan bring oil, honey, brown sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, and salt to a bare simmer.
Pour sugar syrup over dry ingredients and combine.
Evenly pour out mix onto a shallow greased baking pan.
Bake for 15 minutes, then mix, bake again for another 10 minutes. Keep checking to make sure it doesn't over-brown.
Pour toasted granola onto foil to cool.
Store cooled granola in an air-tight container. Will keep fresh for up to 2 weeks.

Assemble parfaits in layers, or set the whole shebang out for guests to serve themselves.

Some simple tips:

For easy dispensing of sticky, viscous ingredients like honey or molasses first spray the inside of the measuring cup with non-stick cooking spray.
Easily grease a baking pan by laying the pan on the door of the dishwasher before spraying (make sure the dishes aren't clean in there first). No oily residue on your counter!
Put the newly made granola back into the original oats container and top with plastic wrap.

open air-showers

There's something about summer that makes me want to spend all my time outdoors. This isn't a new phenomenon either. While growing up, I spent a good amount of my summers on the water. Whether beach, lake, river or pool, nothing is better after a hard day of playing outdoors to shower outdoors. Not only are outdoor showers great to get all the dirt, sunscreen and muck off before heading inside it's completely invigorating and adds to that summertime feeling to shower en plein aire.

Since I'm traveling for a few weeks I asked my good friend and architect, Gina, if she would be interested in putting together a post for me. She mentioned outdoor showers, she's thinking of installing one at her on home in Nashville, and I completely fell for it. Thanks G!

I think I have been enamored with the idea of outdoor showers since I saw one my cousin designed 7 years ago. It was on the 2nd floor of his house surrounded by a solid wall and vivid tile pattern with only a view of the stars at night. Check out the Sakura House HERE on his website for photos.

Since seeing this first shower, they have been popping up on every trip I take. The one pictured here is at a game reserve in South Africa. The houses (there were 5 clustered together behind a fence) were laid out so none of the bathrooms had a view of any other - ultimate privacy. All you could see from each bathroom was the open savannah and the excited baboons and zebras checking you out taking a shower. I have to admit, this was not as relaxing as I had hoped!

On a trip to Little Corn Island in Nicaragua, my friend Ashley and I only had the option of an outdoor shower. You basically filled a cup of water from a barrel to rinse off. The view however made that one of my most enjoyable bathing experiences.

Now, I know a lot of these places sound exotic, but I plan on putting my very own outdoor shower in my Tennessee backyard. There may not be any zebras to gaze at, but maybe that means I will use the shower on a regular basis.

pomegranite margarita

My sister-in-law Catherine introduced me to these margs a few months ago.They are great alone but when paired with a Mexican fiesta, they have become my new favorite margarita. This recipe is just as simple to double or triple if you have a group. However, a juicer really helps with all the lime squeezing you'll be doing.

Pomegranate Margarita
makes 4 margs

1 cup. fresh squeezed lime juice
1 cup Triple Sec
1 cup Pomegranate juice
1 cup good tequila
Garnish with mint

Preparation
Mix all ingredients in a pitcher or glass bottle. Serve over ice with a salted glass rim or blended with salt.

Weekend mornings are relished in my house. Ideally they involve sleeping in, strong coffee, playing with the pup and making breakfast. Usually in that order. If you know me, you know breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. I would skip every other meal just to have breakfast. While I don't always eat a big breakfast, often a piece of toast is just enough, I never miss at least having a little something. I love making breakfast almost as much as I love eating it. I would host brunch for 20 in a heartbeat over dinner for 8. There's something about the combination of savory and sweet and planning a meal that's going to last way into the afternoon, and sometimes evening, that gets me a little giddy.

Recently I picked up Molly Wizenberg's new book, A Homemade Life. I first came across her via Orangette, her weekly blog and musings on food. She's a bit of a renaissance woman, with a degree in human biology, French and cultural anthropology. She writes for Bon Appetit, NPR, PBS, Seattle weekly among others. And if that isn't enough, she, alongside her husband (who she met via her blog) have just opened a new restaurant called Delancey in Seattle. Many meals in my home have been inspired by her recipes and antics, you can't help but love her.

I'm a 1/3 of the way through her book and have made 3 recipes so far, all with a great story. Each thing I made was exactly what I was hoping it would be. One in particular I want to share, hope she doesn't mind. You'll have to pick up the book to see the rest.

Burg's French Toast
makes 6 to 8 slices
3 large eggs
1 cup whole milk
1 tablespoon sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon salt
Pinch of freshly ground nutmeg
Canola or other flavorless oil for frying
6 to 8 slices of day old bread cut on the diagonal 3/4" thick
Pure maple syrup

Preparation
Break the eggs into a wide, shallow bowl. Flat bottom works best here but a bowl will do. Whisk the eggs to break up the yolks. Add the milk, sugar, vanilla, salt and nutmeg and whisk to blend.

Place a heavy large skillet, preferably cast iron, over medium high heat, and pour enough oil to completely coat the bottom of the skillet. By completely coat, she means, this isn't the breakfast where you are watching your calorie or fat consumption. This is what makes the french toast the best french toast ever. The only regret you might have with this recipe would be not following the instructions regarding the oil amount. Heat the oil until, when tested with a quick splash of water or egg batter, it sizzles. Then it's ready.

While the oil is heating put a few slices of bread into the egg mixture allowing them to rest for 30 seconds to 1 minute per side. They should feel heavy and saturated but not to the point where they are falling apart. Once fully saturated, carefully place each piece in the skillet and cook 1 to 2 minutes before flipping. Flip when they have reached a golden brown. If the bread starts to burn before it turns golden, turn the heat down. You don't want smoking. Once each side is browned remove from skillet and place on a plate lined with paper towels.

I like to serve my toast with fresh blueberries, thick cut smoked bacon, warm maple syrup (the real stuff) and a big iced coffee. I'm sure strawberries, peaches or bananas would be just as great as would chicken apple sausage.

As an interior designer, I began this blog to post on interiors, home accessories, architecture and things that inspire me. I see so many interior related items on a day to day basis I decided the blog would be an incredible way to catalogue all that I love, be a good spot to send clients, share with friends and anyone else interested. It's now eight months later and I've barely touched on the subject of interiors and architecture. At first I was a little surprised by this stat. My reasoning behind the lack of interiors posts is simple; after a long day of work I have found music, food and fashion a nice change of pace and an opportunity to explore other things I love.

With that said, these pillow covers are just too good to keep a secret. Etsy shop Be Still has an array of pillows and napkins, each with subtle patterns and muted colors. They would work equally well in a rustic cabin as they would a modern loft. The faded colors and bleeding of patterns reminds me of that transition from summer to fall. Perfect for right now. Thanks to Coco+Kelly for the introduction to Be Still.

And from here on out, I promise to post more on interiors. I've had a bit of blogging A.D.D. this summer. Forgive me for getting off track.

anthropologie - real people, real places, paris

The big box retail store has gone and done it again. Yes, I'm talking about Anthropologie. Their August catalogue is straight out of the books of the Satorialist if you ask me. Remember the film Amélie? Of course you do, how could you forget. Ever since I saw the film I've wanted both a photo booth and a garden gnome. Sadly part one of my Amélie wish list is too large and too expensive to fit my budget and my home. The garden gnome part seemed like a relatively obtainable task. Or so I thought. Yet, most gnomes out there look like they have had a few too many garden mushrooms or even worse, an evil glare.

This is where Brooklyn Rehab steps in. I came across the Etsy store some time ago but just recently found the garden pal. At 6 inches tall, he's perfect for the garden in the summer and will look just as cute inside during the winter months. Be sure to check out all of Brooklyn Rehab's etsy store.

About this time every year I get antsy. Not for fall and cooler weather as one might expect. I get excited for tomatoes. Not the tomatoes in the stores or at the farmer's market. I'm talking about the kind I can walk out my back door and pick straight from the vine. I get excited for cherry tomatoes I can snack on as soon as I walk through the gate. Unfortunately it's going to be a few more weeks before this will happen. In the mean time, I'm making a list of all the things I can make with all those tomatoes. First up is a tomato sandwich. It might sound boring to you. Add a little salt and pepper and a fresh picked tomato still warm from the garden and it reminds me of home. Do you have any tomato recipes you want to share? In the mean time, I thought I would share a few photos from my garden. It's been so rainy this summer, everything is fluorescent green. And I'm loving it.

i have a secret

Without a doubt, I eat Mexican, or some version of Mexican weekly. I don't discriminate either. There's Tex-Mex, New Mex, California Mexican, traditional, southwestern and so on. I love it all. So much so I decided to make my own flour tortillas. I finally found a tortilla press at Sur la Table. I know, a bit of a novelty but if you know how much I love tortillas you would understand. The question now is, have you ever had fresh made tortillas? If so, you'll understand. If not, homemade are so much better than any store bought. I can't even begin to explain.

Like all things homemade, they require a little trial and error. At least this is my experience. My first attempt was dry and cake like but had the right flavor. My second was more like a tortilla pancake. Too thick to even fold. I was in search of a thin and doughy tortilla. Something that would melt in my mouth. With a little tweaking I finally found something that more than works. My secret? I use leftover drippings from bacon in place of regular lard.

Flour Tortillas
makes 12 six inch tortillas

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup lard (I like to use chilled bacon grease)
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1/2 cup warm water

Special equipment: pastry blender, six to ten inch long wooden dowel (found in hardware stores), rolling pin or tortilla press.

Preparation

Stir together flour with salt in a bowl, then cut in lard with a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles course meal. Drizzle vegetable oil over mixture and stir in warm water until dough forms. Knead on a lightly floured surface until smooth and elastic, about 4 minutes, dusting hands occasionally with flour if dough is sticky.

Form dough into a ball, cover with plastic wrap, and let rest 1 hour. Heat a dry well-seasoned cast-iron comal, regular griddle, or skillet over moderately low heat until hot. Cut dough into 12 equal pieces and form into balls.

Roll out ball of dough one at a time. Use just enough flour to keep tortilla from sticking to the press or dowel. Don't try the assembly line method here or you'll be re pressing each tortilla. Like most dough, the tortillas shrink up after pressed if allowed to sit. Keep the remaining dough covered with plastic wrap while working. Roll out each ball into a 6 to 7 inch round, maintaining an even thinness. Place pressed tortilla on skillet and cook 1 minute on each side or until tortilla begins to brown. As one tortilla is cooking press another.

Tortilla will bubble and puff, and bottom will be browned in spots. Once browned flip tortilla and cook second side in same way, moving tortilla around to compensate for any hot spots. Transfer to a kitchen towel. Stack and cover tortillas once cooked. Tortillas can be made ahead of time, be sure to warm them before eating.

cocktail of the week - casa noble tequila

It's been a crazy week and not likely to let up for at least a few weeks. My remedy? A tequila to sip. Not officially a cocktail I realize, it's much more simple than a cocktail. One that requires no ice, mixer, lime, shaking or salt. All you really need is the vessel. How's that for simple?

One of my favorite tequilas is from Casa Noble Tequila Company. A tequila house that's been distilling tequila for over 200 years. And get this all their blue agave plants are 100% USDA organic. So far I have only tried the Crystal but am looking forward to sampling the reposado in the very near future.

Jevan has been reminding me for a few weeks to watch this video. I'm not great at taking time to watch videos and he knows that. Hence the reminding. It's not that I don't trust his recommendations, he's usually spot on when it comes to finding things that would be to my liking. My thoughts are, it's a video, what's so special? I'll check it out when I get a few minutes, if I remember.

As the video begins, it has everything to me that embodies the South. In fact, it easily could have been filmed outside the front door of the house I grew up in. The grey-blue skies just before dusk, grassy fields at the end of summer and a soulful voice singing the woes of a life without. All remind me of the South. Then the dancing begins. There is nothing Southern about these moves. It could only be that of a Swede. Jenny Wilson to be exact.

7 questions, interview with beau & meggan of the world effect

Less than a handful of years ago a small group of friends and I took a weekend trip to Austin. We went for the micheladas, the brisket and the humidity, believe it or not. We also went for the culture indicative only in Austin, keep Austin weird has long been the motto. Most importantly we went for the music. The Austin City Limits music festival to be precise. Jevan, then boyfriend, and I rounded up a group of BBQ loving music goers and made our way South.

When planning a trip of this caliber, one in which people will be meeting for the very first time and there is only one hotel room, it's obvious everyone should get along. Because, Austin in September with 90,000 other festival goers isn't the most glamorous of vacations. Add sharing a hotel room with 4 adults and the anti is just upped. Unexplainable things happen after drinking Lone Stars all day, eating brisket and wearing sandals. One Meggan aptly dubbed body mud. Needless to say, it's close quarters and getting along with hotel-mates is required.

Little did anyone expect this little weekend getaway would spark a relationship. A relationship so perfect, everyone said, why didn't we think of that, even with 1200 miles separating the two. I was even in denial for a little while. Not because I didn't want it to happen. I didn't want it to not happen. Not soon enough, everything became real and Meggan picked up her world in Atlanta and moved to Denver. Finally I could uncross my fingers.

What began as a weekend trip, transformed into Meggan and Beau traveling the world to fulfill their dreams. As the name, The World Effect, implies, they want to see what effect the world will have on their lives. In turn they will do everything possible to make a positive effect on the world we live in. Impressive to say the least. Let them be your inspiration for the week, month or however long you decide. They are out there making something cool happen instead of waiting for it to come to them.

Recently, I Skyped with Meggan and Beau to check in on how their trip is going. They agreed to answer 7 questions for me.

1. Give me some trip stats (last updated June 17, 2009).

2. What is the most unusual thing you have attempted to eat?
Guinea Pig in Peru. I (Meggan) picked out a live one at the market and it was promptly cooked for dinner. Probably won't do that one again. No, it wasn't like chicken.

3. What is your favorite place so far?
The 4 day hike to Machu Picchu and climbing the last 50 steps to a thick layer of fog. At first, the fog was disappointing because we wanted to see everything. Once it lifted we had the most incredible view. So surreal. The clouds, fog and mist only added to the drama.

4. You take incredible photos. Each time I look at your blog, I'm continually impressed. What kind of camera do you use?
We have 2 camera bodies: Canon 40D and a 50D (because we don't share well when it comes down to who gets to shoot, we both love photography). We have 4 lenses: an all around 17-85mm, a telephoto 70-300mm, a wide 10-22mm, and a macro 100mm. We also lug around a manfrotto tripod. Our video camera is a sony HD handycam.

5. You packed light, a rolling backpack and a small day pack for an entire year. What are a few things you can't live without?
For simply living, we would have to say sunscreen, bug spray, and bottled water. For non essentials, we use our laptop and cameras everyday.

6. On a trip like this, you take the minimum. I know you both paired down your bags. Now that you've been traveling for over 100 days, are there things you can live without?
Beau would say his solar power charger. I would say maybe I could have done with less clothes, but I have worn everything I brought.

7. What's next?
We have been in Africa since early June, mostly in a tent. We are heading north and planning to visit Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda and Egypt through the beginning of August. Then on to a new continent.

san miguel de allende wedding

Back in March, Jevan and I went to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico for our friend's, Meggan and Beau's, wedding. I, somehow, let four months slip without sharing anything with you about this incredible place. Incredible in a perfect weather, Mexican food, tequila, all your good friends in one place kind of perfect. My ideal perfect, in case you are wondering.

The wedding was held at the Hyder House, a seemingly unassuming place from street side. As are most places in San Miguel. Once inside the massive wood doors and beyond the story and a half stucco walls, a series of three different houses were unveiled, all with elaborately decorated rooms full of antiques. The wedding was a fiesta of a wedding and a perfect place for Meggan and Beau to celebrate a new beginning together. A new beginning in more ways than one. For those of you who aren't familiar, the two quit their jobs just prior to the wedding and are now traveling for the next year to begin a business together. Inspiring to say the least.

Just over a week ago I saw Phoenix. It was a sold out show and the intensity was not to be missed. Also not to be missed is the new trend in denim. You know what I'm talking about, denim on denim? I think 3 of the 5 band members are wearing this. Back in college I remember trying to pull this off. It got a few laughs. Not exactly what I was going for. I guess it works better for dudes.

winston the pup

As I'm sitting here listening to this puppy snore, the least I can do is introduce you. His name is Winston, he is around 3 months old, and as far as what kind of pup he is, we aren't really sure. Maybe a little hound, there could be some great dane, and he has the markings of a pointer. Like I said, we don't know, and probably won't ever but it is fun to guess. What we do know is there is a whole lot of goodness in this guy. At this exact moment, he's lying on his back with his belly to the world, snoring.

While I'm telling you about him, I should probably tell you where we found him, because that's worth a story in itself. Boulder, Colorado has an incredible Human Society. Not only do they treat the animals well, they take care of vaccinations, provide spaying/neutering, 30 days worth of pet insurance and a microchip in case your little guy is ever lost. They do all of this for over 8,000 animals annually as a private, non profit organization. If you are looking for an animal, I recommend you check here first because there are a ton of sweet looking faces who could use some love.

I haven't posted much of anything in a few weeks. You may wonder why, you may not care. In case you are interested, my lack of posting is not for lack of want. I wish I could write everyday. At this point, other obligations have kept me from this here blog. I won't bore you with details. As it happens, they are rather boring. But what I'm about to share with you is far from boring. It's a great show I caught two Sunday's ago.

Jevan turned me on to the Handsome Furs a few years back. I put their song, What We Had, on repeat for at least a month. This year, they released, Face Control. They are still the husband wife duo they started as and are rocking just as strong. A guitar and a drum machine. That's all they really need.

They came through town a few weeks back and played the Larimer Lounge. I happened to stand on a stool and catch one song on video. The sound isn't great, blame it on the hand held digital camera, not that I was three drinks into the evening. The energy and dance moves do however, make up for the sound quality. At least I think so. I hope you feel the same.

My father in law is a poet, among many other things, and a prolific one at that. He writes at least 3 poems a week and shares them with family and friends. In honor of father's day and all the dad's out there I thought I would share some of his work. Happy Father's Day!

Lake Effect

A single fish leapt from a tired lake
in quiet time’s best moment,

Jevan owns one suit. It's the suit he wore to our wedding. He's not a big proponent of them and I'm OK with that. He would be laughed at if he wore one to work. Something about skating the mini ramp during his 'lunch break' while wearing a suit just doesn't make sense. And I'm all for being sensible.

The last time he wore his suit was to a wedding in Mexico for good friend's Meggan and Beau. It was a festival of a wedding and to honor the occasion, he even wore his cuff links. Somewhere in the fog of the wedding festivities he lost the links. They of course were his only pair. Since then I've been on the lookout for a great set. Something that fits his personality perfectly.

Design Sponge guest blooger, Amy Rupple, recently brought Emma Franklin and her line of jewelry to my attention. Her Animal Collection is something out of a book. Exotic animals, pearls and pheasants all make up cuff links, necklaces and rings. I would seriously have to save for these. As it happens cuff links are pretty low on the list of items to save for but these are making me seriously reconsider.

Consider this your friendly reminder that Father's Day is fast approaching. For some reason, this morning I actually thought today was Father's Day. I was fumbling around trying best to come up with a legitimate excuse as to why my dad's card would be a few days late. But for once, just once, I'm ahead of the game. So to honor me being ahead and more importantly all the dads out there, I decided to put together some posts just for you guys.

If you ask me, every guy needs a good piece of luggage. Whether it's a weekend bag, a backpack/beer cooler or something just to throw your lap top, keys and phone in, said bag is very useful in keeping all the stuff you need in your life organized, at least as organized as you make it. These are just a few of my favorites. And if you really want to know, you could probably steal these from your man. Just my two cents.

Memorial weekend Jevan and I took a trip to California. We went for his sister's graduation and his mom's birthday celebration. We landed at John Wayne and Jesse, Catherine and the boys took us on a quick detour to the Getty.

I've been working on a couple of landscape design projects and found the gardens at the Getty completely inspirational. I really can not believe admission is free. Here are a few phone pics I took. The camera we brought was not really accessible. Think four adults, two kids, luggage and baby gear for everyone all in one car. Of course the camera happened to be in a bag at the bottom of the pile. Cozy.

I love the plantings en mass, the giant proportions and the details. Each and everything was considered. I would love to come back with a picnic and hang out for hours. By the way, how cute is little Alexi. I couldn't resist posting this picture. Today he turns two, happy birthday baby!

sunday fun day - low country boil

My parents were in town from Tennessee visiting this past weekend. It was their first visit since Jevan and I got married over two years ago. This time we didn't have a list of projects for my dad to play Mr. Fix-It. Instead we did a good amount of catching up. I also realized the project list could be a solid reason it's been two years since their last visit. Sorry Dad.

Since we had a lack of 'projects' to keep everyone busy our conversations took on a reoccurring theme. Food. We tend to drink, eat, relax and repeat when around one another. While eating and drinking we usually talk about something great we previously ate/drank or what we should eat/drink next. This is my kind of hanging out. At some point, the conversation at the coffee shop we were eating and drinking at evolved. It evolved to a low country boil. And, how we should make our way to the store to pick up supplies.

Since a LCB usually involves a large amount of food, we had to round up some friends willing to eat and drink with us. Half of the people Jevan and I invited had never heard of a low country boil. A couple called it a broil, another asked what the hell is low country and why do you want to boil it? Most just asked what they should bring. I like those friends. Because this question inevitably involves a preferable response. See below if you are curious.

For those of you unfamiliar with a Low Country Boil, it's pretty simple. Find a really large stock pot. One with a lid and ideally it has a basket. We were fortunate to borrow one at the last minute from our friends Erica and Pete, who also had family in town, thanks you two. Their kit involves a stand up burner that can hook to a propane tank. This way it's possible to cook outside. Because cooking outside is really what a boil is all about.

Low Country Boils originate from the coastal areas of Georgia and the Carolinas. They are meant for simple, easy, living. These days, they are perfect where ever you happen to be. As long as it's warm enough to be outside. Traditional ingredients are also simple; shrimp, sausage, corn and potatoes. Other than that, what you put in the pot is entirely up to you.

LOW COUNTRY BOIL
yield: serves 15ish

5 quarts water
4 pounds Yukon gold baby potatoes. smaller is better for bite sized eating
1 (3-ounce) bag of crab boil seasoning. I used Zataran's Seafood Boil
Tabasco
Cayenne Pepper
Salt
Pepper
3 pounds kielbasa cut into 1½-inch pieces, we used Cajun andouille bison sausage
10 ears of corn, halved
3 pounds large fresh shrimp, peeled and deveined
3 pounds of fresh scallops

Add water to the pot. Cover pot and bring to a rolling boil. Add spices, Tabasco, potatoes and cook 5 minutes. Add sausage and corn, return to a boil. Cook until potatoes are tender. About 10 minutes. Add shrimp and scallops. Cook 3 to 4 minutes or until shrimp turn pink. Remove basket from water, drain and spread on a table for all to enjoy.

Serve with:

Deviled Eggs
Corn Fritters with Arugula and Warm Tomato Salad
Strawberry Tart - this time I didn't screw it up. I put the berries on just before serving.

I have this thing for Stella McCartney. And tennis, while I'm being honest. This love affair has been going on for years. Tennis longer than Stella, but whose counting? Needless to say, I was beyond excited when she started designing for Adidas a few years back. She brings new meaning to the term sportswear. One being, I can actually look like a girl when I play a sport.

Watching the finals of the French Open this weekend has me excited. The icing on the cake would be this little number.

Oh Joy reminded me recently of one of my favorite designers, Built by Wendy. I know what you're thinking, if she's a fav, why would I need reminding? The answer is simple, I do so much window shopping, my favorites often become obscured by the new. And if you know me, I'm a huge window shopper. Time after time I fill my online cart with the exact size and color of choice. Then without fail, I get distracted and abandon my cart. Thinking, I'll go back and buy whatever it was that caught my eye. It's very likely, I'm a website's worst nightmare. I fill my shopping cart only to desert it minutes later because of something else intriguing. Months later I'll remember my finds and realize they are no longer available or it's a brand new season and there are new favorites to be had.

When I'm not window shopping and ready to buy, Built by Wendy is where I go. I happen to have my eye on a couple of summertime somethings, see above and below. Yes, they are still in the online cart, don't laugh. An endless cycle, one not likely to change anytime soon.

As for Wendy and the things she builds, if you're looking to buy, you should know the stuff is made well, in this country, and it has this classically fresh style that I always fall for. You know the one, edgy but not out there. Something I can wear to work, out on the town and likely for years to come, not just a season. Because I'm not really into that kind of abuse. Wallet-wise or when it comes to the enviro. So be sure to check out Wendy, she's got it goin' on.

monolith festival

Summer is the season for music festivals. Whether it's camping at Bonnaroo or doing the city thing at ACL and Pitchfork, there are a ton of festivals out there to enjoy music, people watching and an all around laid back time.

As much as I enjoy traveling to a music festival, this year, I'm sticking close to home. If are looking for a festival to add to your end of summer agenda, I highly recommend Monolith Festival in Morrison, Colorado, September 12 and 13. Red Rocks is a great venue and September in Colorado doesn't get much better. The folks at Monolith are keeping things exciting by posting daily updates to the lineup. There are still more bands to be added. You can follow the updates on facebook or twitter. Here's the list so far.

For me, week night dinners are often difficult. Jevan or I try to make a dinner game plan that involves a stop at the market on the way home. Often our day becomes so busy we forget and both end up at home hungry and impatient. At least that's me. Once home, there's a tiny chance either of us will leave the house to pick up supplies. It's not that we are far from a store, more the principle. If this is the case dinner inevitably involves us standing in front of the refrigerator snacking on whatever crosses our path. Said dinner might include leftovers, cheese and crackers, cornichons and olives. All a plethora of random items that on their own might make for a fine snack but as a whole only fills our bellies and never satisfies the need for dinner.

To bypass this feeling we have a few simple meals that can be prepared on a moment’s notice and involve many ingredients in the pantry. This also helps with any instances of, I Went to the Store and Forgot to Buy ____ Syndrome. A syndrome I happen to be very susceptible of. One of these week night meals is a simple pasta dish with pesto. An arugula pesto at that.

Earlier this month, I showed you my little garden. While very modest, it was just getting started with sprouts of green popping up everywhere. I was a very proud mom. Now that the garden has grown a bit I'm ready to show it off once again. As a matter of fact, we are busting at the seams with arugula and lettuce. So much so we don't really know what to do with it all. A few evenings ago we made a version of pesto with arugula instead of basil and paired it with linguine, tomatoes and red peppers. If the color doesn't make you happy, I'm sure your taste buds will oblige. Pesto happens to be equally perfect in pasta or spread on a piece of bread. So be sure to make a little extra. It will keep for a few days.

The Italians classically toss pesto with linguine along with some green beans and potatoes, but like most Americans, I’ve bastardized the dish: I treat it as a quick dinner fix. A way to get a healthy, satisfying dinner on the table after working a long day. Instead of beans and potatoes I often add thin slices of zucchini, sometimes chunks of salami, maybe even a little buffala mozzarella. Usually it's whatever I happen to have in the fridge. If you don't have pine nuts on hand you could also use walnuts, raw green pumpkin seeds or even sunflower seeds. And, if you want to fancy it up a bit, toss in a little truffle oil. Another nice addition would be homemade breadcrumbs. Now, you have a dinner you can get excited about rather than just something to fill the void.

ARUGULA PESTO

Makes about 1 cup
Active time:15 min Start to finish:15 min

1/3 cup pine nuts
2 cups fresh arugula, tightly packed
2 large garlic cloves
1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
course salt
1/2 cup grated Parmigiano-Reggiano

Mince and mash garlic to a paste with sea salt.

Pulse nuts in a food processor until finely ground. Add garlic paste and arugula and pulse until finely chopped. Add cheese and oil and pulse to combine.

As I type, I’m cringing just a little while thinking how to explain the details of this week’s Music Monday. On paper, this song is against my music sharing ideals. During the year it was released, it was number 1 in the UK Singles Chart. That same year Althea and Donna became the youngest female duo to reach number 1 ranking in the UK charts.

I want you to know I'm not cringing because I'm a music snob. I’m not by any means. I happen to like all genres of music. My reasoning is simple, my place in the blogging world is not about promoting a number 1 single. In fact, it's just the opposite. But, the photo above should shed a little insight in the song of the week. Does 70's Jamaican roots reggae sounds good to you?

Produced in 1978, this one hit wonder of a song, was my summer anthem a few years back. Producer, Joe Gibbs used a re-recording of the riddim from Alton Ellis' 1967 song I'm Still In Love. While I’ve already declared Lisztomania to be my summertime song of 2009. This one will get it's play time too.

I'm not sure how it became the middle of the week. Wednesday evening at that. I even double checked. Thinking it couldn't possibly be Wednesday. But in fact, it's true. It is Wednesday and I'm just now posting for music Monday. Maybe it's the short week that has me running mad to keep up. Whatever it may be I truly apologize for the delay. However, you will hopefully be happy that I'm posting a great song on a Wednesday rather than something thrown together to make my self inflicted deadline of Monday. You don't mind. Do you?

I'm sure you all know the National and there's a good chance you also know St. Vincent. Well they did a little collab cover of Denver band, Crooked Fingers song Sleep All Summer, for Merge Record's 20th anniversary CD that is part of the larger "Score!" box set. This compilation includes covers by some of the most popular indie bands encompassing Merge's 20 years. I recommend you pop over to Merge to check out the incredible collection as there are only 7,500 copies available. The best part, all proceeds benefit charities chosen by the SCORE curators.

Not that I've been counting, but it has snowed, rained, sleeted or been overall gloomy for the past 6 weekends. It's as if I fell asleep Friday night in my home and woke up in Seattle on Saturday and Sunday. The ironic part over these past 6 weekends, and I promise I'm not counting, is that it never fails, on Monday morning the weather that I am aching to enjoy is back. I wouldn't complain but I live in a place that claims over 300 days of sunshine a year. It just so happens, those lovely spring days have been falling Monday through Friday. When I also happen to be at my desk sitting in front of a computer.

What I'm getting at is I have a terrible case of spring fever. Spring fever that involves strawberries and tarts and sitting on a patio in the middle of the afternoon. It's nearly the middle of May and I have barely had the chance to pick up a few extra freckles. Maybe a couple while out running errands over lunch. But not the freckles I deserve to have by mid May.

While yearning for the perfect spring day, the lovely week day weather inspired me to make a Strawberry Tart. A tart that ideally would be enjoyed on a Saturday afternoon on my patio. That of course didn't happen but let me tell you about this tart. It's a looker. Probably the most beautiful tart I have ever attempted. I could not have been more proud. More often than not my fortune in the baking department has been less than stellar. Actually, I shouldn't be so hard on myself. My previous dessert history usually tastes rather good. But gorgeous is not the first word that comes to mind. Pie soup might be a better description.

But, this strawberry tart, the one on the cover of Gourmet's April issue, is perfect for spring. I didn't have mascarpone on hand but did have an 8 oz package of cream cheese. I think it made a nice substitution and will likely make it with the cream cheese again.

For tart shell:
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
3 tablespoons granulated sugar
Rounded 1/4 tsp salt
7 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
1 large egg yolk
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
3 tablespoons cold water

For filling:
1 1/2 lb strawberries (about 1 1/2 qt), trimmed and halved lengthwise
1/3 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup ruby Port
1 lb mascarpone (about 2 cups) or 8 oz of cream cheese
1/4 cup confectioners sugar
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon grated lemon zest
3/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Equipment:

a 10-inch fluted tart pan with removable bottom; pie weights or dried beans

Make tart shell:
Blend together flour, sugar, salt, and butter in a bowl with your fingertips or a pastry blender (or pulse in a food processor) just until mixture resembles coarse meal with some roughly pea-size butter lumps. Beat together yolk, vanilla, lemon juice, and water with a fork, then drizzle over flour mixture and stir with fork (or pulse) until mixture comes together.

Gently knead with floured hands on a lightly floured surface until a dough forms, then gently knead 4 or 5 times. Press into a 5-inch disk. Place in center of tart pan and cover with plastic wrap. Using your fingers and bottom of a flat-bottomed measuring cup, spread and push dough to evenly cover bottom and side of pan. Prick bottom of tart shell all over with a fork and freeze until firm, about 10 minutes.

Preheat oven to 375°F with rack in middle.

Line tart shell with foil and fill with pie weights. Bake until side is set and edge is pale golden, about 20 minutes. Carefully remove foil and weights and continue to bake until shell is deep golden all over, about 20 minutes more. Cool in pan, about 45 minutes.

Make Filling While Tart Shell Cools:
Stir together strawberries and granulated sugar in a bowl and let stand, stirring occasionally, 30 minutes. Strain in a sieve set over a small saucepan, reserving berries. Add Port to liquid in saucepan and boil until reduced to about 1/4 cup, 10 to 15 minutes. Transfer to a small bowl to cool slightly.

Meanwhile, whisk together mascarpone, confectioners sugar, lemon juice, zest, vanilla, and a pinch of salt until stiff.

Assemble Tart:
Spread mascarpone mixture evenly in cooled tart shell, then top with strawberries. Drizzle Port glaze all over tart.

Cooks’ note:

Tart shell can be baked 1 day ahead and kept at room temperature.
Add strawberries and drizzle Port glaze over tart just before serving.

With a name like Elvis Perkins, you need a great introduction. And a great introduction is what I happen to be lacking at the moment. What I am going to do is give you a little history. Because somehow, that tells the story better than any introduction I could concoct.

Elvis Perkins, affectionately named after Elvis Presley by his father, began playing music at a young age. His father, actor, Anthony Perkins and mother, Berry Berenson, whose photography could be regularly seen in Life magazine, raised Elvis and his brother, Oz, in Los Angeles and New York City. In 1992 his father passed away due to complications related to AIDS. Then on September 11, 2001 his mother was aboard the catastrophic American Airlines flight 11 from Boston to Los Angeles that crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center. All of the sudden the sadness and the deep rooted need to write Ash Wednesday, his first album, makes complete sense. It was his mourning.

If his first album, Ash Wednesday, was the funeral, his sophomore album across the music review world has been likened to the second line in a traditional New Orleans funeral procession. This second line is the lively troupe of brass musicians who trail behind the mourners, injecting a spirit of spontaneous celebration into an otherwise somber affair. Often the parade attracts a group of followers just to enjoy the music.

While his eponymous album, still somber, has a glimmer of hope that was nonexistent in his first record. It feels like the perfect following to his much hailed solo debut, Ash Wednesday. Friday night, I had the pleasure to see Elvis Perkins in Dearland live. During that show I was able to get a small peek into what felt like a private moment among very close friends and feel the old soul quality of Elvis' voice. The Other Lives opened and both put on an incredible performance.

a day for mothers

Named after my grandfather and a lead biblical character my mother, Mary Clyde, grew up on a small dairy farm in a little Tennessee town. On that farm she learned to sew just about anything, cook even more, all the while reading books of far away places fantasizing what life was like outside the south. A life without sweet tea, ripe tomatoes warmed by the sun, shucking just picked Silver Queen corn or breaking beans under the shade tree to prep for canning season.

Eventually she made it out of the south. Like many others who left, it always drew her back. There's something about the warmth of the Southern culture that feels like home to just about anyone, local or not. It could be the friendly nature of the people, the humid air that seems to stop time or the comfort food laboriously prepared with love. Whatever it is, I'm always taken aback when a complete stranger offers a slow drawl of a hello to me as I pass. A hello that will make anyone smile.

Over the years my mom taught me some of the best things in life come through a little patience, a lot of elbow grease and I can do anything, as long as I put my heart in it. Just to clarify, I'm not calling anyone heartless for making a complete flop of something. Because that my friends, has happened more often than I would like to admit. What I really mean by heart is perseverance. Keep trying until you succeed. And if you do that, you'll soon learn, it requires heart. A good amount of it.

As it happens, my mom has a big heart. Not only is she a loving wife and mother but she also designs and makes some of the most incredible quilts. Quilts that easily take months to complete. I will be the first to admit, I know very little about quilts other than they keep me warm at night. But, her uncanny knack for pattern and color transforms what on first glance I would easily consider an impossible combination into an interesting play on light and shadow. She also co-wrote a quilting book, And the Greatest of these is Love, on wedding quilts.

In the spirit of Mother's Day and slowing down this post wouldn't be complete without a recipe. My mom's foccacia bread seemed the best fit. It's such a simple recipe but not so simple it can be whipped together at a moments notice. This dough needs time to rise. The better part of an afternoon to be exact.

Mom's Foccacia Bread

4 cups of unbleached bread flour

1 tablespoon of sugar

2 teaspoons of salt
2 1/4 teaspoons yeast or 1 package of yeast

1 3/4 to 2 cups water, room temperature

Lightly mix the dry ingredients together. Add 1 1/2 cups of water and mix. Adding enough water to make a soft, sticky dough. Knead until dough is smooth. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a draft free, warm spot for about 1 1/2 to 2 hours, or until dough is at least doubled in size. Punch dough down and divide in half. Place into 2 butter/oiled loaf round cake pans. (I always use glass pans/dishes to bake mine). Cover with a damp cloth and let rise again for at least 45 minutes to 1 hour. Bake in a preheated 400 degree oven for 25 to 30 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove from pans immediately to a wire rack and cool.

Five straight weekends of either snow or rain have me ready for spring. Especially since March was unseasonally dry and warm. Such a tease of a month really. Things are beginning to turn green in our little garden. Seedlings are popping up and trees are budding.

Seedlings like carrots, beets and snap peas are coming up fast in the garden. Lettuce, bok choy, arugula and Swiss Chard are also doing well thanks to all the moisture. It's going to be another week before we can plant tomatoes or peppers. This is time of year I find myself faced with the difficult challenge of one, being patient. And two, having focus. Two very important traits in adulthood. All I can think about is being outside. I suddenly become a 14 year old without a care in the world. I love the change of seasons. They always do this to me.

I'm tired. I've been working hard all day and am still feeling the aftereffects of last night's mint julep over indulgence. There's nothing like whiskey, mint and sugar water to make for an evil Sunday. Still, I have more work to do and a very early morning tomorrow. At this point, the only thing that is going to keep me going and also let me get some sleep tonight, read no caffeine, is listening to Phoenix's new album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. It's true, the album is that good. In fact, it's infectious, dance in your seats good. And it's out in the US on May 26th.

While I'm being honest about the whiskey, and the dancing in my seat, I might as well tell you this album has been on repeat. The thing is, I don't see myself tiring of it anytime soon. I've already apologized to my neighbors for the number of times they will hear it on my back patio this summer. Soon enough they will be singing Lisztomania word for word. I'm sure of it. I'm only waiting for the weather to warm up a bit. After all, it is just the beginning of May.

As with most new albums, bands need to promote. You know what this means, Phoenix is on tour. Don't miss them if they stop by your city. Just don't forget to get your tickets before they sell out, if they haven't already.

I recently took a long weekend trip to Santa Fe with some friends. We arrived in snow and left to the most perfect blue skies. While this phenomenon is somewhat of a regular occurrence in the west, it still has this Southern girl in awe when there are 12 inches of snow to drive through in the middle of April. Either way, it didn't hold us back. We had one goal in mind once we reached Santa Fe; to eat and drink our weight in green chile and tequila.

Santa Fe has a tri-cultural feel. Blending traditions, styles, colors and menus of Native Americans, Hispanics and Caucasians. This melting pot makes for the best New Mexican style food and art. Even a new way to order green chile. Christmas style. Yeah that's right, you get both green and red chile on the plate. Perfect for reaching the green chile goal.

Centered around the main plaza are small streets full of restaurants and shops. Some touristy, others unique. Here are some of the ones we checked out:

The Shed: 1131/2 East Palace Ave P. 505.982.9030; classic New Mexico food-historical building. Try the green chile stew.
The Shop of the Rainbow Man: 107 East Palace Road; Santa Fe, NM; P. 505.982.8706. Here you'll find vintage clothing, jewelry and artifacts all mixed with Native American style Pendleton wool blankets, Catrina dolls, iguanas and a large collection of Native American art.
Pasquals: 121 Don Gaspar, Santa Fe, NM; P. 505.983.9340. This is a Santa Fe landmark and place not to miss. Be prepared to wait but it's well worth it. They even have their own cook book and art gallery.

At the center of the plaza underneath the overhang vendors line up daily to sell authentic handmade Native American jewelry and small crafts. If you are looking for turquoise this is your spot. Be prepared to bargain.

Just a short drive from the main plaza you'll find:

Maria's: 555 West Cordova Road; Santa Fe, NM; P. 505.983.7929. A modest and unassuming white building from the outside. Something one would easily drive past without a second glance. Fortunately the food is so good we heard the rumors and made the trek. The service is straight forward, meaning someone will tell you which tequila to order for the tasting flight, trago anejo and two reposados that I can't seem to remember the names. Yes, I blame the tequila. Also served, are warm sopapillas with honey. Oh and I almost forgot, the menu boasts over 100 kinds of margaritas.

Another great place to check out is Ten Thousand Waves, a unique mountain spa resort near Santa Fe, New Mexico that feels like a Japanese onsen. For less than $20 you can soak in the communal bath for as long as you like. Clothing is optional during the day but after 8:15PM bathing suits are required. A rule I don't completely understand.

Tesuque Village Market is located at the junction of Bishops Lodge Road and NM 591. P. 505.988.8848. Go on a sunny day and sit on the patio. Then be sure to work off some of the green chile you just consumed with a walk through the Shidoni Sculpture Garden: 1508 Bishops Lodge Road. P. 505.988.8001. Located 5 miles north of Santa Fe and worth the drive winding drive past rural adobes.

If that title sounds like a repeat, you've been a good reader. In the past month kid collective has landed two design projects and both are blank slates. What a great month it's been. While both projects are both landscape design projects, they still involve a lot of design work and I've teamed up with a landscape architect friend to help me work through the plants and odds and ends that are involved with designing patios, walkways, outdoor kitchens and selecting plants.

James and Jess have also graciously allowed me to post the process on this here blog. Thanks you two! More updates to come as the project progresses.

I've been waiting to see Portland based band the Thermals live for what seems like forever. Back in January I posted about how I was hoping they would release something, anything, this year. And both wishes came true this month. On 04.07.09 they released their 4th album, Now We Can See, and last Friday night I saw them live. The best part? The wait was completely worth it. They brought the bouncing-off-the-walls-raw-punk-energy to the tiny Marquis Theater one would expect after listening to their albums. Know what's even better? They sound great and are on tour right now. So I recommend you check out their schedule and put it on your calendar as something not to miss. You won't regret it. Not one bit.

Here's a little video I shot while at the show. The sound isn't great because I snuck behind the speakers to get a better view. You know, one without dozens of bobbing heads. Normally this is something I wouldn't do. When I decided the Thermals would be the next Music Monday's post I became my own version of superwoman because I squeezed and bumped unapologetically past people to show you this energy. Watch Kathy Foster's head. Her hair had me mesmerized the entire show. Props to my mom for rockin' this killer cut back in 1989.

the new magazine

I've told you before how much I obsess over magazines. I have stacks and stacks of them. In baskets, on the coffee table, stuffed in bookshelves, on my night stand. Pretty much everywhere. I don't know what it is about them but I can't get enough. And this obsession isn't new. I have been a dedicated glossy pages obsessor since about 4th grade. Now that's commitment.

I started by collecting issues of teen, 17 and glamour. Then of course cosmo when I could get them past my mom. She wasn't keen on the idea of a 4th grader reading tips on how to make your man happy in bed.

Whatever it is, I love them. Although I don't have as much time as I would like to sit down and read one cover to cover and back again, I'll take what I can get. So in honor of Earth Day, the extended version, I decided to continue the celebration and show you a few blogs that have recently come across my screen.

In this day and economy, blogs are easily becoming the new magazine. They are free to read, some are free to start and they use zero paper. The best part you ask? Instead of a monthly fix, I get a daily fix to satisfy my obsession. And that makes an addict happy, really happy.

I get my fashion photo fix at Backyard Bill. Stylish folks in their own clothes.

I get my design fix at Dezeen. Easily one of the most popular and influential architecture and design blogs on the internet.

And now, thanks to my music loving cuz, Jojo, I get my music fix via the tree factory. As of yesterday she started writing for them. How's that for fresh material? Their tagline? Peeling back the bark to find music under the surfaces of radio and television.

rice krispie treats

Here's a little Friday treat for you. In case it's been a while since you've had a Rice Krispie Treat, they are just as good, maybe even better than you remember. Three ingredients and about 15 minutes of your time and you have one pretty tasty little snack. I wouldn't call it healthy. But they are sugary sweet.

In case you don't remember the recipe I included it below. It's also on the side of the Rice Krispies box.

Melt 3 tablespoons of butter in a large sauce pan over low heat. Add the marshmellows (about 40 large) and stir until completely melted. Mix in 6 cups of Rice Krispies cereal. Stir until well coated. Spoon into 13x9 pan and let cool. Cut into squares. Enjoy.

what is your new normal?

I was listening to NPR the other day and caught only part of a story, as I always do, called the New Normal. It was basically about the new economy that we are living in and what was once normal say, two years ago isn't so normal now. Robert Siegel posed the question, what is going to be the new normal once we get past this economic crisis? Here are few responses.

1. A return to quality products as opposed to throw away items. You get what you pay for. Quality is expensive but cheap costs even more.

2. What was traditionally the golden age of retirement for people 10-20 years ago is going to change. As will the pensions, the medical coverage paid for by the company and social security.

3. When there is a sense that everything needs to count economically there may be pressure for undergraduates to shift from traditional liberal arts degrees to focus on a more practical degree like business or computer programming.

4. Technology will continue to get smaller and smaller.

All these concepts got me thinking. So I jotted down a few ideas. Then decided I couldn't post text only. I would need some eye candy. But what exactly does normal look like? In my mind, it's not exactly eye candy. Am I right? As I was searching for something that felt normal I stumbled upon Marc Johns and his incredibly funny and ironic drawings of normal things on post-it notes.

Feel free to chime in on your ideas of the New Norm or just laugh out loud at some visuals of what the new normal could become. At least it will take away from the serious nature of the subject. After all, laughter is the best medicine.

1. You've heard the mantra reduce, reuse, recycle. Soon enough, and I'm hoping on this one, everyone will question the things they purchase. How was it made? Where did it come from? What is it made of?

2. Always be connected. The new ABC's. You've all seen the add. The kid who sits at the dinner table texting through the entire meal. Soon enough that kid is going to grow up and guess what, he's not going to one day decide he no longer wants to be connected.

3. Bigger is not necessarily better. Cars, homes, TVs. Stuff. More is not always more.

4. Get back to our roots. You've probably heard the term, slow food movement. Farmers markets are popping up everywhere. Eating seasonally sounds better and better and is less expensive. Maybe you'll take a class to learn a craft. Whether it be cooking, gardening, sewing, woodworking or the many plethora of others, what 'trade' is it that's you will pass down?

As a designer I'm often looking for something special, something a little more than just a piece that works. Did I mention it also has to have character and be something that no one else will have? Those are the trials and tribulations of some of my hours spent at the office. Often you can find me trolling around on ebay, craigslist or even 1st dibs to find that perfect something. Or better yet, trying to design said something, completely custom and within budget. This is where Fyndes steps in. They carefully curate furniture, accessories, art work and antiques. And it's all at your finger tips. And here are a few of my favorites.

Because these pieces are one of a kind, expect to pay more than something you'll find at west elm, ikea or cb2. One of my tried and true tips in design is don't buy it unless you love it. Otherwise, what's the point of owning something you don't love? If you love it and I'm not talking about lust or that premature crush, I mean love. Then buy it. Or save until you can afford it. Because there's a good chance you'll keep it for a very long time. That's my philosophy and I'm sticking to it.

for Justin Vernon. I can't remember exactly when it was I first listened to his band, Bon Iver, whenever it was I was immediately hooked. The name Bon Iver is Vernon's interpretation of the French word, bon hiver, meaning good winter. Something he picked up while watching reruns of Northern Exposure. Remember that show? Anyway, during the first snowfall of the winter locals would emerge from their homes and wish one another a 'bon hiver'. Whether it was a good winter or not, Vernon holed up in a cabin in Wisconsin in the middle of the winter and wrote his first solo album For Emma, Forever Ago.

There's something about his heartbreaking falsetto that is strangely beautiful to me. Because of this I couldn't help but wonder if there was a tragedy that spurred the album. I'm typically not interested in the hows, whens and wheres musicians create their albums. But this one in particular stood out. I later found Vernon and his former band, DeYarmond Edison, moved from Wisconsin to North Carolina. As the band settled in NC their creative interests split. After about a year and an album later the group dissolved and Vernon returned to Wisconsin. During that winter in his father's remote Wisconsin cabin, Bon Iver was born. What was intended to be a few snowy Wisconsin months of solace and recovery from both heartbreak and illness turned into For Emma, Forever Ago.

His semi new EP, Blood Bank, was released in late January of this year. It has a similar lo-fi, woodsy sound. And, this fan shot 80's cover from a live show might bring back a few memories.

kid collective just landed it's first official project. Needless to say, I'm more than excited. I teamed up with a landscape architect and we hit the ground running. First up. Site survey. We measured, photographed and documented the entire yard. And let me tell you, it's a blank slate. There's something about a new project that I love. All the possibilities, ideas, the end result could be anything. And that's the best part. Now on to the design work. More updates to follow as the spring/summer progresses.

This post isn't exactly all about music. But, yes there is a but. The trailer for the film I'm want to tell you about is backed by one of my favorite bands, Arcade Fire. So, since I'm the boss on this here blog then I say it qualifies. At least a little. And that's all I have on the music end for today. I hope you are satisfied. I think you will be if you'll just watch the trailer.

As for the rest of the post, my most memorable childhood book is Where the Wild Things Are, written by Maurice Sendak. Did you ever have a favorite book as a kid? Was it the Cat in the Hat or maybe Curious George? What about Beatrix Potter? I remember my mom reading The Tale of Peter Rabbit and Squirrel Nutkin to me over and over again too. In fact, she read all of Beatrix Potter's books to me. While each are wonderful and I'll probably read them to my own children at some point when the time comes, I want to tell you what I love most from Maurice Sendak's, Where the While Things Are. It's the illustrations, hands down. They bring the book to life. Part friendly, part scary, these illustrations give a typical story of a boy meeting up with imaginary monsters an edge. When the book was written in 1963 the illustrations were somewhat scandalous. Some parents felt the monsters portrayed were too grotesque for children.

Fast forward more than 45 years and the film, adapted by Spike Jonze's and Dave Egger's has similar issues. It took some time to get fully through production. Something about financial issues and the monsters made kids cry at a pre-screening. I liken the crying during the film to this generation's equivalent to the book. Kids these days probably wouldn't think twice about reading the book and seeing those monsters. Is this film completely kid appropriate? Not sure. I'll leave that up to each parent to decide. Am I excited to see the film? Yes, but it will have to wait until October 16, 2009. Until then, the trailer will have to hold me over.

I got lucky when I got married, not only did I find a great guy but I also inherited a pretty stellar line up in the in-law department. Yep. Lucky. Now you understand exactly how lucky. If you are like me and have ever dated someone and not felt that warm fuzzy connection with his side then tensions certainly rise. Or are completely flat depending on the situation. And holidays, well, let's just say they aren't exactly fun. Fortunately, my new family members are all inspiring and two in particular are bloggers.

Catherine, my sister in-law, started Bay Area Baby Blog while in search of cool kid stuff in her neck of the woods. I won't even claim to be versed in the tricks of the trade when it comes to kids and all the new gadgets. So Catherine sorts through all the fluff and finds what truly works. I use her tips when I'm looking for a baby gift. As it seems everyone I know is preggers these days. She also writes regularly on daily life in the bay area including spots to eat with kiddos and antics on life with her boys. The bonus? Most of the photographs you see are all her own.

Then there's Jora, the hub's favorite cuz. After spending just a second reading her blog, Domestic Reflections, you'll completely understand why she is his favorite. She's the gal you would easily have a girl crush on. Not only is she a smarty, but she's an incredible cook, gardener, wife and mom. She posts regularly on C-Man and Baby J, life on the farm and what I call Jora-tested recipes. Some of my favorites are her Meal Planning Monday's. She's great at whipping up just about anything. And I mean, whipping up in the most effortless sense. All with ingredient plucked from her ever changing garden dubbed green acres. The bonus? Every recipe I have ever made from her blog is good. Really good. That's what I mean by Jora-tested.

I'm not into video games except for one. Ms. Pacman. And not the traditional arcade style Ms. Pacman. I'm talking the cocktail table that you sit across from someone and play a sophisticated game of chasing bouncing fruit and running from ghosts.

This love began when I was probably in 4th grade. My best friend in grade school was Jennifer H. Come on, you all probably know about 10 Jennifer's and they were all, like, your best friend. Anyway, BFF Jenn had an uncle with a cabin at the lake. We would spend a decent amount of time during the summer at said cabin swimming, lounging and, get this, playing Ms. Pacman on a cocktail table.

That is when the obsession began. It still resides and if I ever find myself with a few extra thousand dollars with nothing else to spend it on, I will own a Ms. PacMan cocktail table. If you happen to have a few extra grand then check out this baby on ebay.

no one does it like you

Each December the hubs and I put together a list of our favorite songs. Throughout the year we are listening and watching for new tunes. So when he showed me Pitchfork TV's video of Department of Eagles playing No One Does it Like you from a rooftop in NYC, I knew it would make the cut.

As great as it is to see the band play on a roof top in the city, the official video for the song is that much more incredible. On March 24th, at the MOMA in NYC nonetheless, the video for No One Does It Like You was released. Apparently it was produced via favors and kindness because no one had any money. Regardless of finances and who did or didn't get paid, the video was produced by the Directors Bureau, directed by Patrick Daughters, who directed the famed Feist, 1234 video that apple used for their nano campaign and Marcel Dzama, who also designed the costumes and sets. You can't go wrong with dancing ghost solders.

7 questions - interview with scott hasson

In 2006 I met Scott Hasson on a lousy soccer field playing coed. Eventually he joined my team full time and we've been playing soccer together once a week since that summer. It took over a summer of playing together and a few beers after games to find out he's a photographer. And a great one at that.

His quiet and modest nature is passed on through his photography. The work he produces evokes an old world feel. Like the shots were photographed ages ago instead of weeks. Part of that is due to his meticulous attention to detail and hours spent setting up for the perfect shot. All this just to capture every intricacy whether perfect or not.

7 questions - interview with scott hasson

kc: Where are you from?

scott: I'm from Maryland but live in Colorado now.

kc: When did you start photographing?

scott: I always enjoyed taking photos but I never had an official camera until 1998. I decide to go back to school for photography, my first major was Sports Medicine, and got a degree in photography from the Art Institute of Colorado. Over the past 8 years have I made photography my profession.

kc: What are you working on these days?

scott: Currently a trip to the Pacific Northwest is in the works. The series is going to be called water. I would like to go for a month, camp and just shoot. I usually travel alone on these trips so I don't have to worry about other agendas. My time is limited and this way I can focus on what I want to get done.

kc: Digital or film?

scott: Film. Digital is great to an extent. I have a digital point and shoot that I took on my honeymoon so I wouldn't spend the entire trip working. For work I use a large format camera and film. There is something about film that isn't captured through digital.

kc: Any tricks of the trade?

scott: I've been working on light painting. When most photographers are packing up because the light is going down, I'm just getting started. I would say another is patience. I'll wait for hours and hours just to get one perfect shot rather the instant gratification of using digital.

kc: What/who is your inspiration?

scott: For photography, David Burdeny, Chip Hooper, and Bruce Barnbaum all have amazing work.

kc: Since this blog is a collective, is there anything you collect?

scott: My wife would say I collect anything made out of wood. I would say I collect unique wood stumps with the purpose of making either furniture or just as design elements.

Portland, Oregon has some of the best shops around. The last time I was in the city my friend, Sammy, took the hubs and me around to hit up his favorite locales. One of my new favorite spots on our Saturday agenda was Life and Limb, an independently owned and operated plant and modern wares shop. This little place is a one-stop-shop for modern plants and the items that house them. If you are looking for something rustic and crafty, this is not your spot. Think white ceramic, clean lines and succulents all with a mid century modern vibe.

The shop also curates monthly art exhibits showcasing local and national artists. And, yes, I'm saving the best news for last, Life and Limb now has an online store. So you can shop till your heart is content.

Nope, I'm not speaking in code. SXSW = South by Southwest, the amazing music festival in Austin. It's like a trade show for music and you get to be a part of it. Bars, restaurants, hotels, music venues all open their doors and host music for a straight four days. Meaning your favs could play multiple times throughout the city. Could it get any better? I don't think so! Here's the full schedule.

Gorilla vs. Bear is hosting a great show called Gorilla vs. Booze III. My favorite radio station, KEXP is broadcasting all their shows live starting tomorrow. When I was young, on weekend mornings my parents would pack up the car and much to my dismay, we would go antiquing. It was pure agony for my brother and me. All we wanted to do was watch the smurfs and Saturday TV fun house. Instead we found ourselves making up games like boundary line or the lean game in the backseat of the car and asking repeatedly, are we there yet? I'm not really sure how to write about a film that I've only watched the preview. Let me preface this with, TOKYO! is different from any preview I've watched in some time. Not only is Tokyo Police Club in the sound track but there are three parts each with a different director, non of which from Tokyo. Director Michael Gondry of the famed Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind, Leos Carax and Bong Joon-Ho examine transformation, anarchy and rebirth all in the heart of Tokyo. The film addresses the timeless question whether we shape cities or do they in fact shape who we are.

Since I haven't seen the film, here's a little blurb from the producers Masa Sawada and Michiko Yoshitake:

"All cities evolve. But whereas Paris or New York have managed to maintain balance between tradition and evolution, TOKYO! is destined to develop endlessly. Economic growth has seen the city change at an exponential rate. This enormous metropolis is a film set in itself. Neither quiet nor calm, the city overflows with dizzying energy.
